pile-on, piley-on

n.

Always widely announced by shouting "Pile-On!" which brought everybody running to jump on the pile of legs and arms which would accrue after only seconds. A varient of this wonderful game would involve pointing at large metal, electricity carrying structures and asking the victim "Whats that?", with obvious results (pylon). Guaranteed to reduce the weedyest kids to tears. Popular on people's birthdays and at the end of term. Often the end result of a "game" of British Bulldog.

Also defined as: A term applied when an unfortunate pupil slipped/fell on the playing field during a game of football or lawncutter (aka British Bulldog). The cry would draw all boys from all years and all corners of the school to jump on the fallen pupil. The resultant heap could reach up to five feet high, involve up to 30 participants and leave the original kiddie crushed somewhere at the bottom.

This ritual is still observed in Wales when someone slips over at the pub. The only difference now is that it is indiscriminate of gender.
