prisoner ball

n.

A needlessly violent game much beloved by primary school children until it went the way of Bulldogs and was banned. Played on a netball court, 2 teams would face each other in the end thirds of the court. A tennis ball (or cricket ball for the really hard people) would be thrown from one end to the other in an attempt to hit a member of the opposing team.

Those hit became prisoners of the other team and stood in the opposition's end of the court, in the semicircle at the end. They would then try to recapture the ball for their team - if they succeeded in catching it they would run back to their end of the court, as the opposite team used any means possible to stop them escaping.

I both loved and hated this. Being a crap shot didn't help, but after the inevitable capture and bruising, I could run like hell to escape beatings from my friends. Too many people got hurt at my primary school, and we were confined to playing rounders - nowhere near as good.
